    Abstract [sv]

    När den legendariska svenska reportern Barbro Alving, signaturen Bang, 1951 åker på reportageresa till det svenska Norrland gör hon sig till talesperson för myndigheternas framväxande välfärdsprojekt. Detta innebär att norrlänningar ska uppfostras till bättre hygien, bättre matvanor och bättre läsvanor. Den här artikeln gör generaliserande värderingar synliga när narratologisk och medieretorisk analys samt stilanalys belyser ett samspel mellan berättarperspektiv och berättarröst i Bangs åtta reportage från Norrland. Analysen visar hur valet av källor återspeglar ett klassamhälle där högre samhällsföreträdare, tillsammans med den berättande reportern, får stå för artikelseriens problemformuleringar samtidigt som framför allt fattiga kvinnors livssituation skildras med medkänsla men sällan någon djupare inlevelse. Med en närmast filantropisk blick görs norrlänningar till föremål för ”folkhemmets” välfärdsförbättrande insatser, samtidigt som de själva inte inkluderas i det ”vi” där reportern och hennes Stockholmsläsare ingår.

    Abstract [en]

    Hur ser berättelsen om svensk gängkriminalitet ut i tre aktuella reportageböcker och med vilken berättarteknik är den konstruerad? Med en blandning av narratologisk och medieretorisk analysmetod undersöker den här artikeln hur innehåll och form samspelar i Mammorna av Alexandra Pascalidou, Familjen av Johanna Bäck- ström Lerneby och Tills alla dör av Diamant Salihu. En slutsats är att skiftande berättarperspektiv kan motverka ensidighet, samtidigt som narrativ medkänsla utan parallell narrativ inlevelse kan hindra läsarens möjlighet att föreställa sig de skildrade människornas situation. Dramatiserade händelseförlopp kan öka närvarokänslan, medan en reporter som ifrågasätter sin egen auktoritet uppmuntrar läsaren till att undvika förenklande slutsatser. Till sist bidrar person- beskrivningar och urval av fakta i de tre böckerna till skilda budskap. Studien visar att reportagegenren tack vare sin narrativa form har potential att skildra samhällsproblem på komplexa sätt. Detta gäller särskilt när gestaltningen kombineras med gedigen faktaresearch.

    Abstract [en]

    In recent years, media researchers have displayed an increased interest in emotion as an element of the content in both news journalism and narrative journalism. These studies lack a theoretical definition of emotion and do not usually specify what characterizes narrative journalism more than it being "not objective" and, consequently, not similar to conventional journalism. In practice, they identify emotion through frames of personalization or explicit expressions of feelings and evaluations. However, narrative journalism integrates implicitly conveyed emotion. To enable a broader understanding of the function of emotion in narrative journalism, this article gives examples of and analyzes how emotion and the related concept subjectivity is used and discussed in two different fields of research: social sciences-influenced journalism studies and literature-influenced studies. The dualistic view on journalism as either subjective or objective is questioned when narrative journalism (also known as reportage or literary journalism) is placed in a professional context, where the genre is based on its own tradition and represents its own form of knowledge, due to its main characteristic: a narrative form. Finally, the article demonstrates how tools drawn from narratology can illuminate diverse storytelling techniques that transmit emotion implicitly rather than explicitly.

    Abstract [en]

    This report started with the guideline project that revolved around two problems in the game industry, the hypersexualization of female characters and their stereotypical designs in games, and a wish to solve these problems. Fashion was chosen as a new approach to solving them and the question formulation for the guideline project was: how can we incorporate fashion in order to strengthen a female characters personality, role and overall design in games? 

    Three methods were used; firstly a systematic literature review to gather knowledge about the fashion industry as well as the game industry’s character design process. Secondly, the creation of the guideline, “The design handbook – how to improve female character design”, which would serve by presenting a solution to the problem. Thirdly, qualitative interviews to test whether or not the guideline could serve as a possible solution against the problems of sexist and stereotypical designs and if it could overall improve female character design in games.   

    The results of the qualitative interviews deemed the project a success; nine out of ten interviewees answered that it would serve as a solution against the problem of both hypersexualization and stereotypical designs. The results of the guideline project and the interviews answered the bachelor’s thesis’ question formulation about how to improve female character design through fashion in the following way:  

    • Be inclusive. The priority should be to design interesting characters, regardless of gender.
    •  Know who your character is. Give the character a complex and interesting personality and design with that personality in mind; it should be strengthened through all the other design choices (be it color, silhouette or outfit details).  
    • Make it believable. The outfit needs to work like a second narrator and should not contradict the setting, the personality or the character’s role.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim: This study examines the discursive construction of medical cannabis in Swedish newspapers, with the aim of understanding how the news media recontextualise the medical potential of cannabis.

    Design: The study is centred on the concept of recontextualisation, which focuses on how discourses are reinterpreted and reshaped when moving from one context to another, with a special focus on recontextualisation in relation to the media. Methodologically, the study uses critical discourse analysis to qualitatively analyse 134 articles of different subgenres, published in four Swedish newspapers between 2015 and 2020.

    Results: The study shows that medical cannabis is constructed around myriad topics and contexts, ranging from news that focuses on the medical potential of cannabis to articles where medical cannabis is mentioned in passing and constructed in a more abstract form. The media have difficulties retaining a conceptual boundary between medical and recreational cannabis. Moreover, the study shows that the medical potential of cannabis is discursively constructed using three different discourses: patient discourse, strong science discourse, and weak science discourse.

    Conclusions: The study suggests that there is a widening of the debate on cannabis in the Swedish public sphere, giving more recognition to the potential medical use of cannabis. The media, however, show difficulties in refining discourses on medical cannabis, which results in an altering between constructions that are strongly connected to science, and those that are not.

    This study examines the reporting on legal cannabis in order to explore the operation of neoliberal ideology in journalistic discourse. Cannabis legalisation is here understood as a way for capitalism to create new market opportunities, besides being a turn away from the so-called ‘war on drugs’. The study understands neoliberalism as operating via market-based logics that are interrelated with other social logics, such as those pertaining to journalism (Phelan 2014). Critical discourse analysis is used for studying Swedish newspaper reporting on legal cannabis between 2013 and 2018. The study shows that a struggle between market-based logics and journalistic practices is visible, where journalism has difficulties in challenging core tenets of neoliberal ideology. The article concludes with a discussion of how the current conditions of journalism limit its ability to challenge neoliberal perspectives.

    This study examines the construction of media literacy in a special issue on source criticism of the Swedish children's comic Bamse - Varldens Starkaste Bjorn [Bamse - The World's Strongest Bear]. This is done with the purpose of understanding what values, perspectives, and practices are promoted when media literacy is communicated via children's edutainment media. Using narrative and discourse analysis, we problematise how notions of truth (such as post-truth) guide much of the discourse on digital media in today's post-political society, and how that and individualisation shape notions of media literacy. This is visible in the analysed case in how source criticism is constructed in relation to notions of truth and falsehood, and as moral lessons aimed at the individual media user. We argue that such an individualised, decontextualised, and depoliticised take on media literacy is problematic and an expression of neoliberalism and a middle-class gaze.

    This study examines how ASMRtists, people that create ASMR videos, attempt to create intimacy in their videos on YouTube. ASMR stands for Audio Sensory Meridian Response and is a tingling sensation within the body that can be triggered by various stimuli, such as visuals and sounds. This study processes girlfriend roleplay ASMR, which is when female ASMRtists roleplay being the viewer's girlfriend. ASMR and girlfriend roleplay ASMR are relatively new phenomena which have emerged through digitalization and its reconstruction of the concept of intimacy. It has yet to be scientifically researched and this study contributes to the research gap. Through conducting semiotic video analyzes, this study explores how the ASMRtists attempt to produce intimacy in their girlfriend roleplay ASMR videos. The result landed in that the ASMRtists attempt to produce intimacy in various creative ways that override the screen. It is likely that the ASMRtists attempt to generate both an emotional and physical connection to the viewer through combining elements from real-life relationships and different ASMR triggers. Through making use of theories of dramaturgy, the male gaze and gender displays, the study has analyzed the material and uncovered norms and structures in society that the ASMRtists arguably rely on. The number of people that consumes these videos shows that there is a demand for new ways of creating intimacy. The development of digitalization will most likely continue to open up new forms of digital intimacy which makes it an exciting topic to conduct further research on.

    This study aims at exploring the rhetorical processes underpinning condolences, as expressed by Saudi Arabian governmental authorities on social media, with a focus on Twitter. Taking its starting point in January of 2015, when the Charlie Hebdo shooting took place in Paris, this study looks comparatively at several acts of terror in order to answer whether these different attacks elicited different responses, and if so, what knowledge can be drawn from this conclusion. Furthermore, this study examines the role of social media in public diplomacy, and in the production and distribution of political discourse, especially as it relates to statements of condolences and expressions of solidarity mediated through twitter. In order to explore this, rhetorical criticism (Mral 2008; Foss 2004; Peirce 2003) is combined with pentadic criticism (Burke 1945) and performativity theory (Rosenberg 2018; Zivi 2016; Gregson and Rose 2014) to form the methodology. A key theoretical concept in this study is “grievability,” which aims at understanding why some deaths are grieved and others are not (Butler 2009; Butler 2004; Butler 2003). As this study shows, mourning itself can be understood as rhetoric, serving political and diplomatic functions rather than being an expression of actual, sincere solidarity or grief. This study also shows that tweets from official government sources can be seen as a performance of public diplomacy, and as performative of the official’s own position. Lastly, it is argued that offering condolences are a way to purchase “humanitarian capital,” which is becoming increasingly important in global politics.

    Following in the celebrity trajectory of mommy bloggers, global micro-microcelebrities, and reality TV families, family Influencers on social media are one genre of microcelebrity for whom the “anchor” content in which they demonstrate their creative talents, such as producing musical covers or comedy sketches, is a highly profitable endeavor. Yet, this commerce is sustained by an undercurrent of “filler” content wherein everyday routines of domestic life are shared with followers as a form of “calibrated amateurism.” Calibrated amateurism is a practice and aesthetic in which actors in an attention economy labor specifically over crafting contrived authenticity that portrays the raw aesthetic of an amateur, whether or not they really are amateurs by status or practice, by relying on the performance ecology of appropriate platforms, affordances, tools, cultural vernacular, and social capital. In this article, I consider the anatomy of calibrated amateurism, and how this practice relates to follower engagement and responses. While some follower responses have highlighted concerns over the children’s well-being, a vast majority overtly signal their love, support, and even envy toward such parenting. I draw on ethnographically informed content analysis of two group of family Influencers on social media to illustrate the enactment and value of calibrated amateurism in an increasingly saturated ecology and, investigate how such parents justify the digital labor in which their children partake to produce viable narratives of domestic life.

    This chapter discusses the emerging practices of social media Influencers. In focus are six influential Instagram Influencers who were ‘exposed’ for involving themselves in campaigns aiming to discredit telecommunications providers in Singapore. In the absence of enforced legal boundaries and industry norms regarding advertising formats and advertising ethics, brand scandals are frequent, causing concern among regulators, brand managers, and platform owners. When starting to accommodate commercial brands and contents in social media posts, Influencers are constantly at risk of breaching their contract of trust with their followers. The case study shows how Influencers, followers, and eventually also the brand clients, are sensitive to what they experience as deceptive and unethical behaviours that will put normative pressures onto the Influencers to conform to certain ethical standards.

    The Gender-in-Media Landscape Study (Vietnam) aims to inform the activities of the Southeast Asia Media Training Network by exploring gender equity in the media workplace. Towards this end, data was gathered through a broad survey and multiple focus group discussions.The survey found:

    More women worked in the media than men, including in recent years increasing numbers in management positions. Balancing work demands with family pressures – which by far fall dispro- portionately upon women – was a significant challenge to many careers.Women and men worked across a wide range of roles and beats within the industry, with the main exception being relative dominance of male journalists in sport and science and technology reporting.

    Media institutions followed legally-mandated leave requirements, including maternity leave. However, any further policies and operations in support of gender equity – such as some flexibili- ty in hours, or carer’s leave – were inconsistent, and generally ad-hoc or dependent on personal arrangements where they exist. They often don’t adequately meet staffing needs.

    The great majority of respondents received at least some training in the past two years which was valued; the main complaint was the limited number of training sessions. Men had greater general access, although majorities of both genders received training.

    Toward Gender Equity: Women and Media in Cambodia2018Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))

    This report aims to provide Fojo and its project partners with data and perspectives on gender in the media workplace, which can help ensure gender is integrated throughout project activities. in Cambodia project partners are the Cambodian Centre for Independent Media (CCIM) and the Cambodia Communications Institute (CCI). 

    The report includes a brief overview of Cambodia’s current political situation, national-level gender issues, and media industry, including the industry’s scale and levels of media freedom. This provides context to interpret the findings on gender dynamics within the media sector itself.

    As described under ‘Methodology’ below, the data are both qualitative and quantitative, combining focus group discussions and an extended survey. The researchers hope the data can meet the goal of informing and supporting curriculum design and delivery, whether in ‘technical’ skills or in broader gender awareness and policy; and in supporting the gender policies of both partners and Fojo.

    This thesis aims to explore the video game medium in depth, to relate it to the stories foundon Internet communities about users’ gameplay experiences during burdensome moments inlife. To achieve that, the phenomena is explored through the lenses of Uses & Gratificationstheory by means of a netnography on the ‘/Persona 5’ official subReddit; interpreting, codingand analyzing all narratives that fit the criteria with the help of a proposed ‘USE’ system. Themodel is in charge of classifying the information into explicit displays of ‘Dissatisfaction’,‘Motivation’, ‘Immersion’ and ‘Emersion’. The resulting codification enabled the creation ofeight different types of reports among a sample of one-hundred threads, all in correlation withthe varied aspects of the game that act as categories. The data derived from the conclusions ofthis study shows that players are not motivated to use the video game for any other purposesthan mere entertainment. Yet, the immersive potential of the virtual world addressed theirdissatisfactions and made them emerge back to reality with, mostly, not-sought gratifications. Still, not all players were able to control their video game uses to regulate their emotions,further implying the importance to continue researching cases of media immersion toestablish guidelines of ethical design and appropriate production and consumption practices.

    Current changes in the media industries not only provide a range of new business opportunities for entrepreneurial start-ups, they also force legacy media firms to engage in corporate entrepreneurship and (re-)develop their entrepreneurial orientation as part of their strategic renewal. In recent years, media entrepreneurship has emerged as an area of study within media business studies, but it still lacks theoretical anchoring. While in mainstream entrepreneurship research entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has developed into a highly prominent theoretical concept, it has been largely overlooked for the study of media firms to date. This paper introduces entrepreneurial orientation to media business studies. It characterizes EO’s different dimensions and reviews relevant studies, and then illustrates the dimensions of the EO concept by drawing on the case example of a European online publisher. The case shows how different dimensions of EO are at play in the media firm and how the relevance of these dimensions is not stable over time, but in constant flux. Such process perspective on EO is outlined as a major future research opportunity for media entrepreneurship studies.

    This editorial reviews current research about media entrepreneurship and introduces the four papers published in this special issue. These papers move the emerging academic field of media entrepreneurship forward by outlining the relevance of context for enhancing our understanding of entrepreneurial phenomena, by introducing the theoretical concept of ‘entrepreneuring as emancipation’, by analyzing the institutionalization of media entrepreneurship education, and by categorizing different investment types in corporate entrepreneurship. The editorial concludes by calling for continuing efforts to theory-building to further develop the field.

    Some of the most perceptive contributions to the geographic study of media and communication have been in areas of landscapes studies and geohumanities. To bring landscape and geohumanities insights together more explicitly with communication and media, this progress report draws on George Revill’s concept of an ‘arc of sound’, expanding the concept’s scope to an arc of communication – a dynamic trajectory connecting one vantage point to another through various translations and shifts. It is a mix of integration and translation that forms its own space, place and time, integrating elements of embodied performance, multiple sensory modalities, temporality, absence and excess. Arcs of communication often depend on collaboration and can produce transformations of identity. The concept of the arc of communication enables discovery of numerous threads connecting landscape studies to geohumanities while deepening geographical understandings of media and communication.

    We call for a fundamental restruc turing of research paradigms in geography and media/communication studies to form a bridge between core concerns of the 2 disciplines. This endeavor responds to contemporary historical changes: mediated/mediatized mobility, technological convergence, interactivity, new communication interfaces, and the automation of surveillance. Long-standing concern with a set of issues we call representations, textures, structures, and connections provides a foundation for this interdisciplinary bridge. Integrating these concerns would produce a semi autonomous field, manifested through collaborations between geographers and media theorists.

    Vi som har skrivit denna artikel är alla verksamma inom forskningsmiljön Svenska med didaktisk inriktning (SMDI) vid Malmö högskola. Frågor om språkutveckling i bred bemärkelse står här i centrum. För närvarande är vi engagerade i projektet ”SMDI och lärande i medielandskapet 2.0”. Vår teoretiska plattform kan beskrivas som medieekologisk, vilket kortfattat uttryckt innebär att vi är intresserade av de mångfaldiga och komplexa relationerna mellan medier och kommunikativa kompetenser (Elmfeldt & Erixon 2007; Erixon 2012; Hayles 2002). Dessa relationer förstås därför inte, som så ofta annars i skolsammanhang, i termer av enkelriktad påverkan eller effekter (exempelvis datorns och internets negativa inverkan på skriftspråket). Vår huvudpoäng i denna artikel är att medie- och informationskunnighet, MIK, handlar om, borde handla om, framför allt två saker: språkutveckling och demokrati.

    Abstract [en]

    This study investigates the feasibility of enhancing community engagement through gamification, using a prototype third-person 3D adventure game called Harmoni. The research targets international students in Gotland, Sweden, aiming to reduce cultural barriers and promote community involvement. By integrating game elements such as altruistic missions, language learning, and historical exploration, the prototype seeks to motivate real-life participation in community activities. Data collected from pre- and post-surveys and follow-up interviews with a small sample size (n=10) suggest that gamification can positively impact community involvement. Despite the limitations of sample size, the findings indicate that thoughtfully designed gamified experiences can foster a sense of belonging and encourage active participation in community life. The study underscores the potential of gamification in educational and social contexts, offering insights for future applications and improvements in game-based community engagement strategies.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this qualitative content analysis is to investigate how stereotypes, stigmatization and trivialization around psychological disorders, more specifically around people with dissociative identity disorder, are maintained through representation in films and how the representation differs within two different film genres, horror and comedy films. With the films Me, myself & Irene and Hide and Seek as the basis for the analysis and by using the theoretical concepts of representation, stigma and trivialization, an analysis scheme was applied to sequences from the material, which, through the semiotic analysis tools denotation and connotation, were used to answer the study's research questions. The results showed that both films maintained stigmatizing and/or trivializing depictions of dissociative identity disorder but that they differed in their way of portraying the disorder. These approaches lead to different perceptions of the disorder but have similar real-life consequences.

    This audience study explores the changes of news consumption and avoidance behaviour by young millennial immigrants from various backgrounds, living in Stockholm, Sweden. Considering various theoretical frameworks, such as the intentional vs. unintentional model (Skovsgaard & Andersen, 2020), the migration change model (Tabor & Milfont, 2011), as well as a combination of a phenomenology of news model (Bengtsson & Johansson, 2021) and media repertoires established by Swart et al. (2017), a qualitative research has been conducted consisting of eight semi-structured interviews. Through a thematic analysis possible patterns have been established and findings show that individuals tend to change their behaviour in news consumption for various reasons. (1) Participants want to be able to establish their own news-routines and use their migration as an opportunity for a new start, (2) there is a certain influence by people closest to them and with their social circle changing, their (news) interests change as well, and (3) motivation and interest play an important role in shaping new consumption behaviours in a new country: the more one is interested in learning more about the new country, its culture and its language, the more likely they are to check that country’s traditional news media sources.

    In today's society, everything is expected proceed quickly, easily and smoothly. This also applies to websites on the Internet. When you visit a website, you want thewebsite to be easily accessible and you also want to find what you are looking for quickly. It is therefore important that the menu is easy to navigate. The menu is very important for the experience of the website, as you use the menu to navigate through the website. The menu will guide users through the website, will help them plan their actions, will determine where they are and will help them find their way back if they would get lost.In this study, we have created and designed a website with menus of four different types. Our study is based on a number of theories about cognition, perception,usability and effectivity together with theories about how to create a good menu. We will use these theories in our study to determine which of the menus is the most effective. To find out which menu is the most effective, test participants were asked to conduct a usability test. During the usability test, we tested the effectivity of themenus by measuring the amount of time required by the test participants to perform different tasks, as well as how many clicks were required and how frustrated the test participants became. Then, we compared how the different menus performed inrelation to each other. The test participants were also asked to respond to aquestionnaire where they subjectively described their thoughts on the menus.Our results from this study can be used as guidelines when choosing which type of menu to use on a website, where navigation is expected to be as effective as possible.Our results show that the horizontal menu is the most effective one of the different menus we have tested. However, which menu is the most effective in a given situation or on a given website depends on many factors, and thus, the horizontal menu is not always preferable to use on every website.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis compares the visual representation of Syrian refugees during the 2015 refugee crisis and Ukrainian refugees during the Russian invasion 2022 in news outlets Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dabladet and Aftonbladet. The aim of the study is thus to investigate how ethnic groups are framed in a photojournalistic setting. The theoretical concept otherness is used to analyze the selected visual images and the concept of visualities highlight how photographs published in the media communicate political messages and how images reflect immigration discourse. Additionally, photojournalistic regimes of visibility and responsibility are used to illuminate similarities and dissimilarities in the material. In total, 200 images made up the sample for the performed qualitative visual analysis.

    The findings reveal that empathetic portrayals dominate the Swedish narrative. Syrian refugees were overrepresented in imagery alluding to otherness painting a picture of Syrians as ethnic, cultural and dangerous others. Photography triggering social and political engagement were crucial in the forming of visualities, relating visual images to the political and public arena. The sampled images did reflect immigration discourses of intimidation and humanity.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study has been to find out how Kenyan journalists look at their own role in the development of the Somalia conflict and how they work to make sure that they have a positive impact on the situation. The empirical material consists of seven semi-structured interviews with journalists who work in print- or broadcast media in the Kenyan capital Nairobi and who specialises in conflict reporting in general and Somalia more specifically. The interviews were summarised, analysed and presented in a thematic order, based on the initial research questions stated below: 

     

    • Do Kenyan journalists believe that they can help bring peace and stability in Somalia and if so, how?
    • How do Kenyan journalists look at their own role in reporting about the Somalia conflict?
    • How do Kenyan journalists reason when choosing subjects to report about, angles and sources?

    The result of the study is very clear: all journalists interviewed believe that they can help bring peace and stability in Somalia. Some even believe that without the media, there won’t be peace in Somalia. However, they look slightly different at their individual roles as reporters covering a conflict in a neighbouring country where their own nation is militarily involved. Some look at themselves as objective messengers that report the truth no matter the implications. Others are sensitive when it comes to showing pictures of dead people or publishing the number of casualties, afraid that it might stir up emotions and cause retaliatory attacks. One journalist stands out as the only one openly supporting a patriotic line that he believes is needed for the Kenyan military to defeat the enemy and in the end achieve peace and stability in the region. They all consider it difficult to remain objective when reporting from Somalia, since they most often need to work embedded with the troops for security reasons.

    African journalists need to highlight the plight of the Somali people and also report about the positive sides of the region, all journalists believe. It is important to paint a brighter picture of Somalia in order to bring new investments to the poor country. Also, they all emphasise the need to talk to the people of Somalia, to let them speak for themselves, because in the end, only Somalis can bring peace to their country.

    Problemformulering och syfte: Lokaltidningarnas pappersupplagor minskar i Sverige. De digitala plattformarna blir allt viktigare för mediehusen när människor i allt större utsträckning övergår till att konsumera medier via sina mobiltelefoner. En naturlig del i utvecklingen blir att medierna följer samma väg, för att på det viset också i fortsättningen nå ut till sin publik, och på längre sikt säkra och stärka sin ekonomi. Syftet med vår studie är att undersöka varför svenska lokalmedier väljer att implementera nya tekniker och det gör vi genom att i en fallstudie följa mediekoncernen Mittmedias satsning på mobila och digitala plattformar när koncernen lanserar nyhetsapplikationer och push-notiser under hösten 2015. Vi studerar hur lanseringen förbereds, vilka strategier och drivkrafter som är inblandade och hur lanseringen genomförs på fyra olika redaktioner inom Mittmedia.  Metod och material: Vi inleder med att studera och själva använda test-versionerna av applikationerna och deltar på Mittmedias förberedande möten. Vi genomför sedan kvalitativa och semistrukturerade samtalsintervjuer med digitalchefer på respektive redaktion som ingår i undersökningen, samt den redaktionellt utvecklingsansvarige på Mittmedia. Intervjuerna genomförs dels i samband med att nyhetsapplikationerna släpps ut till allmänheten, dels några veckor senare i uppföljande syfte.  Huvudresultat: Vi kommer fram till tre nyckelord: Lokalt, lojalt och betalt, som tillsammans sammanfattar det breda spektrumet i lanseringen.

    Första säsongen av tv-serien 13 Reasons Why fick stark kritik efter att den lanserats på Netflix 2017. Tv-serien behandlar ämnena psykisk ohälsa och suicidalitet. Kritiken riktades främst mot hur dessa ämnen glorifieras och kan uppmana tittare att reagera destruktivt. Trots att psykisk ohälsa och suicidalitet inte är några ovanliga ämnen att representera inom populärkulturella verk har tv-serien fått oönskade negativa konsekvenser och kritik. Genom en kvalitativ textanalys med inriktning på representation och semiotik har vi analyserat det empiriska materialet utifrån diverse element som representerar psykisk ohälsa i första säsongen av tv-serien 13 Reasons Why. Detta för att undersöka hur psykisk ohälsa representeras i serien och huruvida den förtjänar den kritik som den har mottagit. Studiens syfte är att frilägga de representationer av psykisk ohälsa som kan leda till negativa konsekvenser för mottagaren av texten, som vi benämner som fallgropar. Att bilda kunskap kring hur psykisk ohälsa inte bör representeras är viktigt för att kulturproducenter ska kunna undvika fallgropar som kan få negativa konsekvenser för mottagare av deras verk. 

    Med stöd från det teoretiska ramverket har vi kunnat identifiera fyra fallgropar som seriens skapare inte har lyckats undvika i representationen av psykisk ohälsa i tv-serien 13 Reasons Why.

    Studien i denna rapport undersöker huruvida en spelares identifikation med sin spelarkaraktär i ett spel påverkas av att spelaren har möjlighet att utforma sin karaktärs bakgrundshistoria.

    Studien innefattar en kvalitativ undersökning och fokuserar på västerländska RPG-spel. Frågan undersöks genom att en grupp av erfarna RPG-spelare observeras och intervjuas i samband med att de spelar igenom en kort artefakt.

    Resultatet av undersökningen visar på att genom att ge spelaren val kring spelarkaraktärens bakgrund ökar chansen för spelaren att uppnå en hög grad av identifikation med sin spelarkaraktär, då denne kan välja karaktärsdrag som uppfyller spelarens egna kriterier.

    Denna studie granskar källor i form av personer i rapporteringen kring terrordådet på Drottninggatan 2017. Krissituationer innebär ett akut och stort behov av information hos allmänheten. Forskning har påvisat att svenska medier brister ur en källkritisk aspekt vid rapportering kring kriser, därför är det viktigt att granska källanvändningen vid dessa extraordinära händelser. I den här undersökningen fokuserar vi på personkällor och en av frågeställningarna som studien behandlar är: Vilka personkällor användes i rapporteringen? Inom kriskommunikationsforskningen är det vanligt att dela in en kris i olika faser då rapporteringens tema skiftar under olika tidpunkter i krisen. Därför behandlar studien även frågeställningarna: I vilka artikelteman förekommer de olika personkällorna? Vilka likheter och skillnader fanns i användningen av personkällor i fas 1 och fas 2? Vilka likheter och skillnader fanns i förekomsten av olika artikelteman i fas 1 och fas? 

    Studien bygger på en kvantitativ innehållsanalys av totalt 290 nyhetsartiklar från Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen och Svenska Dagbladet. 

    Resultatet av studien visar att de vanligaste personkällorna var ”polis” och ”politiker”. Förstahandskällor var vanligast med 78% av alla personkällor och 10% utgjordes av alla personkällor utan namn. Manliga personkällor dominerade rapporteringen med 77% och kvinnorna utgjorde 33%. Resultatet visade även att det fanns vissa skillnader mellan de två faserna. Det förekom fler personkällor i fas 1 generellt och även fler elitpersoner. Frekvensen av olika personkällor och artikelteman förändrades i de två faserna vilket påvisar att rapporteringens innehåll såg olika ut vid olika tidpunkter i krisen.

    Tidigare studier av (Bailey et al, 2013) beskriver att vanligt förekommande är: kvinnor som söker uppmärksamhet från män, genom att lägga upp sexualiserade bilder av sig själva på sociala nätverksplatser. Med detta sagt hade forskarna som mål att öka förståelsen för hur unga kvinnor tolkar dessa kvinnors stereotypiska självrepresentationer på Facebook (ibid). Till följd av ett intresse för studien ville jag ta reda på hur istället män får erfara kvinnliga stereotyper på sociala nätverksplatser. Syftet med min undersökning var således att utforska hur kvinnliga stereotyper på Instagram kan förstås. Forskningsdeltagarna i min studie var totalt 10 män uppdelade i semistrukturerade fokusgrupper. Teman och stimulimaterial valdes ut efter de kännetecken som Baileys studie menar att denna stereotypiska kvinnliga självrepresentation innefattar (Bailey et al, 2013). Resultatet visade bland annat att männen betraktade den kvinnliga självporträtteringen som oäkta och tolkade den som ett sätt för kvinnor att övertyga andra och sig själva, om att de lever åtråvärda liv. Det fanns även en enighet om att självporträtteringen är typisk för just kvinnor. Åsikterna var varierande i den yngre och äldre gruppen om huruvida det är fördelaktigt eller ej med denna typ av kvinnliga instagramprofiler när de är öppna för allmänheten. Samtliga män i den yngre gruppen, menade att en kvinna med en stängd profil är mer åtråvärd. Detta på grund av att det visar att personen i fråga inte är lika beroende av vad andra tycker. En äldre forskningsdeltagare menade istället raka motsatsen. Det vill säga att en stängd profil med samma innehåll tyder på osäkerhet och rädsla för potentiella elaka kommentarer från allmänheten. Utifrån svaren blev det tydligt att det fanns några återkommande teman i resultat och analys, vilka var: äkthet, normativitet och påverkan.

    Monetization is now a fundamental aspect of video game creation and currently, all developers are trying to utilize it in the various designs of their games. Contemplating the monetized aspect of video games, this research has seen a gap in the studies pertaining to monetization from the perspective of the consumers, who are also the gamers and the buyers of these monetization designs. This paper approaches monetization from the perspective of consumers to bridge that lacuna. It aims to gain insights into the consumer mind by initiating a conversation between previous theories and present discussions to arrive at a middle ground on monetization in AAA games between consumers and game designers. It achieves this by the use of an online survey and semi-structured interviews with core and casual consumers. Furthermore, this research is supported by a discourse analysis on YouTube by game critics and reviewers. The results of the study showed that monetization is beneficial to independent developers and mobile games, it is also beneficial in AAA games if it is left to the part of the game design that does not affect the quality of the game. For example, cosmetics and DLCs, as long as those DLCs are not gated game lore that consumers are forced to buy. The impact of monetization on AAA games is a fifty-fifty issue on the part of the consumer and developer. The financial impact consumers project to developers justifies the rationale for the continuity of monetization models regardless of the quality of the games design. In the future research is needed to better understand consumer perspectives on monetization, particularly among consumers who have grown up in different gaming eras. Additional studies with larger sample sizes should be conducted in order to make valid generalizations and capture the perspectives of teens. Future studies should also focus on games and game studios that have implemented micro-transactions successfully, considering game design quality, revenue, and customer satisfaction.

    Building on the notion of the Greek crisis as a discursive event and revisiting theories about the sociocultural role of television fiction, this chapter introduces the latter as a framing mechanism through which events of the social world are defined and assessed. By uncovering the dominant interpretative frames underlying the story, setting, characters and plot of the popular Greek television comedy Piso Sto Spiti (MEGA channel, 2011–2013), this analysis illustrates television fiction’s contribution to the construction of the root causes of the crisis as tied to the cultural traits of Greeks, the impossibility of change and the futility of an alternative, left-wing consideration of the crisis, as well as an attempt to morally assess the situation at hand.

    This book explores fictional representations and narrative functions of animal characters in animated and live-action film and television, examining the ways in which these representations intersect with a variety of social issues. Contributors cover a range of animal characters, from heroes to villains, across a variety of screen genres and formats, including anime, comedy, romance, horror, fantasy, and science fiction. Aesthetic features of these works, along with the increased latitude that fictionalized narratives and alternative worlds provide, allow existing social issues to be brought to the forefront in order to effect change in our societies. By incorporating animal figures into media, these screen narratives have gained the ability to critique actions carried out by human beings and explore dimensions of both the human/animal connection and the intersectionality of race, culture, class, gender, and ability, ultimately teaching viewers how to become more human in our interactions with the world around us. Scholars of film studies, media studies, and animal studies will find this book of particular interest.

    This study engages with the cultural consequences of the self-disparaging politics of television satire. It focuses on an emblematic program of Greek television fiction, Oi Afthairetoi (MEGA channel, 1989–1991) and the ways it both constructs and ridicules a particular version of the Greek self, the “Neoellinas”. By proposing a wider understanding of the political side-effects of television satire, which have so far been mainly addressed within the study of political satire, it turns the attention toward the role of satirical discourse in a public’s view on its national self in times of change or transition. More specifically, while it recognizes the contradictory impact that satire can have on society, it applies the concept of “satiric misfire” as a means to understand satirical endeavors which reinforce rather than counter the problematics they set out to fight against in the first place.
