    Abstract [en]

The International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities offers a comprehensive guide to the current state of scholarship about men, masculinities, and gender around the world. The Encyclopedia's coverage is comprehensive across three dimensions: areas of personal and social life, academic disciplines, and cultural and historical contexts and formations.

    The Encyclopedia:

    • examines every area of men's personal and social lives as shaped by gender
    • covers masculinity politics, the men's groups and movements that have tried to change men's roles
    • presents entries on working with particular groups of boys or men, from male patients to men in prison
    • incorporates cross-disciplinary perspectives on and examinations of men, gender and gender relations
    • gives comprehensive coverage of diverse cultural and historical formations of masculinity and the bodies of scholarship that have documented them.

The Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities is composed of over 350 free-standing entries written from their individual perspectives by eminent scholars in their fields. Entries are organized alphabetically for general ease of access but also listed thematically at the front of the encyclopedia, for the convenience of readers with specific areas of interest.

    Abstract [en]

Originally conceived by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 as a tool for the analysis of the ways in which different forms of social inequality, oppression and discrimination interact and overlap in multidimensional ways, the concept of 'intersectionality' has attracted much attention in international feminist debates over the last decade. Framing Intersectionality brings together proponents and critics of the concept, to discuss the 'state of the art' with those that have been influential in the debates that

    Abstract [en]

This edited volume contributes an important collection of chapters to the growing theoretical and empirical work being undertaken at the international level on men and migration. The chapters presented here focus on what we might call ‘migratory masculinities': the experiences men have of masculinity upon immigration into another national, ethnic, and cultural context. How do these men (re)construct their conceptions of masculinity? Where are the points of tension, ambivalence or assimilation in this process? Featuring interviews and data drawn from migrants working and living in Australia, this book explores how the gender identity of men from non-English-speaking backgrounds is influenced by the experiences of migration and settlement in an English-speaking culture, across various cultural spheres such as work, leisure, family life and religion.

Reflecting on men and social policy: Contemporary critical debates and implications for social policy2010Ingår i: CRITICAL SOCIAL POLICY, ISSN 0261-0183, Vol. 30, nr 2, s. 165-188Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

To put men and social policy together may still seem a little strange. Yet there are numerous ways in which social policy is about men, in its formulation, implementation, delivery, and inclusions/exclusions. Different men have variable relations to social policy, and are involved and implicated in social policy in a wide variety of ways, as: users, family members, practitioners, managers, policy makers, members of social organizations, and so on. Likewise, the explicit gendering and naming of men is uneven in different social policy arenas. This article discusses contemporary debates in Critical Studies on Men - masculinity and multiple masculinities; hegemonic masculinity and the hegemony of men; embodiment; and transnationalization and virtualization - and in each case considers their implications for social policy, before some concluding remarks.

The implications of information and communication technologies for sexualities and sexualised violences: Contradictions of sexual citizenships2006Ingår i: Political Geography, ISSN 0962-6298, E-ISSN 1873-5096, Vol. 25, nr 8, s. 944-963Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A key aspect of globalisation, glocalisation and transnationalisation is the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Such technologies have major implications for sexualities and sexualised violences, and raise profound implications, contradictions and challenges for sexual citizenship. These implications include the affirmation of sexual citizenship, with the creation of new forms of sexual communities, and the denial of sexual citizenship, with the production of new opportunities for pornography, prostitution, sexual exploitation and sexual violences. The article goes on to focus particularly on the contradictory implications of ICTs for sexual citizenship. These include the simultaneous development of more democratic and diverse sexual communities, and sexual work and sexually violent work, movements beyond the exploiter/exploited dichotomy, complex relations of non-exploitative and sexual exploitation, commercialisation of sex, and enforcement of dominant sexual practices, blurring of the social, sexual-social, sexual and sexually violent, and of the sexually 'real' and sexually 'representational', closer association of sex with the 'visual' and the 'representational', increasing domination of the virtual as the mode(l) for non-virtual, proximate sociality, and possible impacts of the virtual on increased non-virtual, proximate sociality, even greater possibilities for 'pure relationships', shifts in sexual space and sexual place, development of new forms of transnational sexual citizenship, within shifting transpatriarchies. Contradictions between the scale of global material sex economies and the representation and reproduction of the sexual through ICTs appear to be increasing.

The personal is work is political is theoretical: Continuities and discontinuities in (pro)feminism, Women’s Studies, men and my selves2008Ingår i: NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research, ISSN 0803-8740, Vol. 16, nr 4, s. 241-256Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This essay reflects on some specific questions posed by the organizers of the Past, Present, Future conference held at Ume University, Sweden, in June 2007 to the keynote speakers on their personal experiences of the influences, inspirations, challenges, and problems in and around Women's/Gender Studies over the last 30 years. It extends the notion of “the personal is political” to: the personal is work is political is theoretical. It also critically reflects on continuities and discontinuities in women's studies, (pro)feminism, “men” and my selves. Four kinds of (spheres of) activity and experience (the personal, work, the political, the theoretical) are considered in relation to four social spaces, social sites, or social institutional formations (in this context, primarily: selves, “men”, feminism/profeminism, women's/gender studies).

    Abstract [en]

Representing the work of some of the best-known theorists and researchers in masculinities and feminism in South Africa, this highly original work is comprised of a collection of papers presented at the "From Boys to Men" conference held in January 2005. Based on rich ethnographic studies in South Africa and elsewhere in in the continent, this collection addresses the argument that because South African feminine studies are fraught with problems, boys and men should be included in all research and intervention work studying gender equality and transformation. Chapters examine several issues of the African male psyche, such as varying identifiers of manhood, teenage masculinity, paternal responsibility, and the impact of HIV/AIDS in the region.

    Abstract [en]

Sociology and sociological theory has been effective in analyzing societal and institutional conflict and violence, but less so the specifics of interpersonal violence. This article examines the sociological significance of domestic violence. This relationship, or sometimes its neglect, is underlain by several tensions and paradoxes, which in turn have broader implications for sociology and sociological theory. These matters are examined through: the possible paradox of violence and intimacy in the phenomenon of domestic violence; the importance of the naming and framing of such violence; explanation, responsibility and agency; and gender, hegemony and discourse in mens violence to known women, as part of a multifaceted power approach.

Writing as intimate friends …: how does writing profeminist research become methodologically challenging?2012Ingår i: Emergent writing methodologies in feminist studies / [ed] Mona Livholts, New York: Routledge, 2012, s. 184-198Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary challenges for seeking new knowledge in feminist studies are intimately intertwined with methodological renewal that promotes justice and equality in changing global contexts. Written by some of the leading scholars in their fields, this edited collection focuses on the emergence of writing methodologies in feminist studies and their implications for the study of power and change.

The book explores some of the central politics, ideas, and dimensions of power that shape and condition knowledge, at the same time as it elaborates critical, embodied, reflective and situated writing practices. By bringing together a variety of multi/transdisciplinary contributions in a single collection, the anthology offers a timely and intellectually stimulating contribution that deals with how new forms of writing research can contribute to promote fruitful analysis of inequality and power relations related to gender, racialisation, ethnicity, class and heteronormativity and their intersections. It also includes the complex relationship between author, text and audiences.

The intended audience is postgraduates, researchers and academics within feminist and intersectionality studies across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The book is excellent as literature in feminist studies courses and helpful guidance for teaching writing sessions and workshops.

    Abstract [en]

The world is becoming more transnational. This edited collection examines how the immense transnational changes in the contemporary world are being produced by and are affecting different men and masculinities. It seeks to shift debates on men, masculinities and gender relations from the strictly local and national context to much greater concern with the transnational and global. Established and rising scholars from Asia, Australia, Europe and North America explore subjects including economies and business corporations; sexualities and the sex trade; information and communication technologies and cyberspace; migration; war, the military and militarism; politics; nationalism; and symbolism and image-making.

    Abstract [en]

In 1991 in a Cambridge University laboratory two computer scientists, Quentin Stafford-Fraser and Paul Jardetzky, wanted to keep their eyes on the availability of fresh coffee while they were working. Accordingly, they fixed a recycled video camera to an old computer and then a video frame-grabber on top of the coffee machine placed outside their working environment, called the “Trojan Room”. In the name of having more “control” over the coffee, they posted the very first real-time cybersurveillance recording process on the Internet: 1 they could watch it from other places. This, one of many examples of the reach of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and virtualization, has led into many kinds of transnational cybersurveillance experiences that have since grabbed the attention of many Internet surfers (Campanella 2002). Transnationalizations take many forms and have many implications for intersectional gender relations, for men and masculinities, for hegemony. They comprise acutely contradictory processes, with multiple forms of difference, presence, and absence for men, and women, in power and men, and women, who are dispossessed materially or in terms of aspects of citizenship. Different transnationalizations problematize taken-for-granted national, organizational, and local contexts; gender relations; and men and masculinities in many ways. This chapter builds on critical debates on men, masculinities, hegemony, and patriarchy in relation to intersectionalities and transnationalizations. It uses the concept of transnational patriarchies, or transpatriarchies for short, to speak of the structural tendency and individualized …

Men, masculinities and workplace diversity/diversion: power, intersections and contradictions2006Ingår i: Handbook of Workplace Diversity / [ed] Alison M. Konrad, Pushkala Prasad, Judith K. Pringle, London: Sage , 2006, s. 299-322Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

"By assembling an international cast of contributors from all walks of research life, Professors Prasad, Pringle and Konrad successfully broaden the scope of scholarly discourse on workplace diversity. This stimulating volume considers how to define this fuzzy construct, what "differences" are more important than others, and how to make best use of alternative research methods at different levels of analysis. It reviews what we have learned about workplace diversity along several important dimensions (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, weight, sexual orientation, disabilities, class), and it offers useful recommendations for how to conduct future research that will expand our knowledge of the implications of diversity for individuals, marginalized groups, work organizations, and societies'" - Gary N Powell, Professor of Management, University of Connecticut

"In this much-needed Handbook, an international collection of first-rate scholars deals incisively and perceptively with the problems of diversity, difference, inclusion, and cultural pluralism in organizations. This Handbook will be invaluable for researchers and advanced students - one of those books that stays on the top of the desk, covered with bookmarks'" - Joanne Martin, Stanford University

Globalization and its melting pot of different nationalities, ethnicities and cultures is attracting research that is gathering in substance and theory. A dynamic new field that represents a significant focus within management and organisation studies is emerging.

This Handbook showcases the scope of international perspectives that exist on workplace diversity and is the first to define this hotly contested field.

Part I of the Handbook dissects the theoretical reasons and shows how the study of workplace diversity follows different directions. Part II critiques quantitative and qualitative research methods within the field, while Part III investigates the parallels and distinctions between different workplace groups. Key issues are drawn together in an insightful introduction from the editors, and future directions for research are proposed in the conclusion.

The Handbook of Workforce Diversity is an indispensable resource for students and academics of human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational psychology and organization studies.

Unge, kjoenn og prnografi i Norden - Mediestudier (Young people. gender and pornography in the Nordic region - media studies)2007Bok (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [no]

Nordens unge ser pornografi. Hvordan bruger unge pornografien i deres hverdagsliv?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to present a theoretical overview of what makes a leader effective using the theoretical lenses of behavioral and contingency theories and the theory of transformational leadership. We then analyze these theories from a gender perspective. The presence and effects of gender discrimination in the workplace, managerial and subordinate preconceptions and attitudes as identified in the current body of literature and the possible consequences for potential female leaders are discussed. Finally, the article turns to discuss the interaction between national and organizational culture and gender in terms of leadership opportunities. The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion on the above areas and to provide a bringing together of perspectives so as to facilitate future research. This is a review article where we theoretically examine the gender context in leadership theory and practice with some illustrations from observation and experience.
